As, in addition to being visually differentiated, they have different attack patterns, this gives the game quite a bit of variety, especially when combining several enemies. If you look closely, each level appears a new variety of monster. The interesting thing is the very intelligent use they make of them. In fact, there are few monsters in the game. They also couldn’t have a lot of different enemies.

Making use of the different objects that can be placed and some text on a note or poster, the game manages to represent a kitchen, a warehouse or a stable. The game has 13 levels, but there are only three “tilesets”: dungeon, temple, and prison.

This allows that instead of having to model all the levels, the modeler created a set of pieces that fit together for the level designer to create the mazes. To begin with, the first “trick” they use to alleviate their limited resources is that the graphics engine works with tiles: the Legend of Grimrock dungeon is made up of a set of bounded square pieces.

How did Almost Human manage to make a game as good looking as Legend of Grimrock with four people and in just ten months? The savings go up to a point and they couldn’t afford a multi-year development. However, to keep risk under control, they didn’t want to rest on their laurels either. As they already had a lot of experience, it would not be difficult for them to find work if the game did not work, so the personal risk of this adventure was not too much. They themselves claim that Almost Human was a test and that they were going to play the game they wanted. From this we can get two pieces of information: first, that the four were not at all new to making (and finishing) games and, second, that little was played in this adventure. Juho and Olli had worked at Futuremark, where Petri started out as a programmer and Antti had level design experience at Fathammer, a well-known mobile gaming company. Petri and Antti came from Remedy, where they had worked on Alan Wake.
